LOGLINE

After the recently divorced father is denied access to his 9-years old daughter on her birthday, he returns to her school with a cake, a present, and a gun, causing the hostage situation. But his impulsive reaction could prove disastrous since the desperate mayor starts to speculate how much the class of murdered children would improve his chances on the upcoming local election.

synopsis

A middle-aged, recently divorced father of a nine-year-old daughter, furious that he cannot spend his daughter's birthday with her, bursts with a birthday gift, a cake and a rifle into her classroom. The hostage crisis ensues, and the Mayor of the county center in which the events takes place, together with a policeman, father of one of the birthday girl's classmates, try to solve it. The situation arouses interest of the media, particularly of the local correspondent of a big daily news portal. When the kidnapper calms down and decides to release the children, it may be too late, because his family links to the Mayor's main opponent at the forthcoming local elections has already been discovered, and the Mayor takes steps which will make sure that the children get killed, so he could discredit his political opponent. The media have nothing against such an outcome, either. On the contrary; dead children are always the lead story. The situation changes radically – the kidnapper now has to save the children he threatened with his rifle up until moments ago, since a death squad has been sent to the school masked as an intervention police unit. The father-policeman also realizes that something is amiss, and he is forced to cooperate with the kidnapper he barely knows from the PTA meetings, and doesn't particularly like, to put it mildly. Altogether, it doesn't bode well, since the control over the whole incident is in the hands of the journalist of a popular internet portal, whose intentions are very questionable.

directors statement

The logline of the “Extracurricular” goes like this: After the recently divorced father is denied access to his 9-years old daughter on her birthday, he returns to her school with a cake, a present, and a gun, causing the hostage situation. But his impulsive reaction could prove disastrous since the desperate mayor starts to speculate how much the class of murdered children would improve his chances on the upcoming local election. However, this will not be an action-paced popcorn movie nor a violent gorefest. I'll try to address bigger problems and through different characters deal with themes which are affecting worldwide reality and perception of everyday life.
